THE PALACE SCHOOL

JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN

Construction Area: 7500sqm

Capacity: classrooms & labs (class ix to class xii), multipurpose spaces, library, open air theatre, sports & leisure

Following the development of the palace school, run by The Royal Highness, the new garage architecture studio was invited for design competition. The brief identified an area for extension surrounded by dilapidated old structures and a dense tree. With its expanse and stringent local bye-laws, the design development started.

The 20-foot-high age-old 'peepal' tree is the social heart of the entrance pavilion. The concept stays around this tree viz-a-viz an old indian practice of ‘pathshalas’. In the interiors, through generously lit spaces by using traditional stone screens and linear skylights, the design intends to breakthrough the practice of monotonous school planning with dark passages. Wide ramp as a sculpture sits in entrance lounge as circulation & an exhibition space.

Passive & active climate control systems in hot & dry climate of Rajasthan, plays an analytical role during the design formalisation.
